Hike to the leading edge of the glacier.
We could not hike to it but got close enough to get a great view and hear the
ice crack as it goes down the mountain.

Day 80 to 82 - Fox Glacier - beach
Surprisingly, the beach is close to the glacier
and we spent an afternoon walking along its shore. It was especially beautiful with
tree sized drift wood and gigantic waves breaking onto the green and black stone beach.
The mist above the sea and the wind ripping the tops off of the
waves and playing with our hair were a perfect backdrop for sunset.
And the drive back to the hotel, at night, on
the one lane winding dirt road, through the mountains, in our camper van, was a
good workout for our adrenal glands.
Day 80 to 82 - Fox Glacier - Lake Matheson
When we arrived at Fox Glacier, the mountains were
lost in a cold dense fog that swirled into low clouds. We decided to stay for a
day or two, hoping for better weather so we could take a helicopter flight up
to the glacier's upper reaches for a hike. Unfortunately, the
clouds, and an on-and-off rain, stayed with us from here until the last day of
our trip. It was still beautiful, and now we have even
a better excuse to come back!
We took long walks in the surrounding forests
and lakes and did make a hike to the lower part of the glacier. Below are
pictures from the lake.
