Day 183 - San Francisco and surroundings

A day enjoying the area before heading back to Houston.
Very nice to be back in the Bay!

Day 176 to 182 - Spirit Rock Meditation Center

Going Solo!   I took my first solo trip in quite a while (beside business trips) to attend a silent retreat for women North of San Francisco. Kenobi and Choci stayed in Houston. It is very nice to have a supportive husband who volunteers to take care of our high energy 2-year old while I am off to California exploring new things!

The idea for the trip started years ago when I read a book from Jack Kornfield, randomly picked up at a cool little bookstore, partially because of a pretty lotus flower on its cover and partially because I was intrigued by Buddhism. The book was a "guide to the universal teachings of Buddhist psychology" and I found it different, wise, and beautiful. Reading more about Jack Kornfield, I discovered he was a cofounder of a meditation center in California. So when I decided to learn meditation (one among the very long list of things I would like to learn), I thought that a week-long retreat at this center would be a great place to start.

So off I went, not having any real clue what to expect, but looking forward to giving it a try.  The property in the hills North of San Francisco was beautiful and the experience turned out to be a little odd, and certainly unique, but well worthwhile.

Day 173 - Houston - Back Home

We finally arrived back home and had a bit of a surprise when we looked in our backyard. Where there was once a big beautiful tree, there was now a big empty with three foundations poured to build four-story monstrosities that will be right on the edge of our property line.
Oh the joys of Houston zoning.

At least, as a consolation, we now, from our breakfast table, can admire our neighbors behind (literally) as they take their morning showers.

Scientific observations:

- You can gain efficiency by showering and brushing your teeth at the same time

- In a small shower, if you back up to make room to wash your feet, frosted glass loses efficiency

- and yes, as Yahoo suggests, showering together is fun... or at least it certainly appears to be so

Note to self - don’t use frosted glass for shower windows and do any of you know the world’s fastest growing hedge????
