One of the places we visited in Kyoto was a WWII
memorial resting on the mountain slopes that border the East side of the
city. Avalokitesvara, who embodies the
compassion of all Buddhas, sits above this memorial that pays its respects to
the Unknown Soldier, the over 2 million Japanese soldiers who died and poignantly to all Allied personnel, each individually
named, that perished under Japanese jurisdiction during the course of the war.
