If we felt like we were at the edge of civilization in Haast, after
driving South for an hour along the beach to Jackson Bay we felt like we
were at the end of the world.
The bay is the most westward point of New Zealand and the small road that meanders through the dense rainforest along the coast from Haast terminates at the sleepy fishing village of Jackson Bay. It is surprising and refreshing to be in a place where roads end.
If interested in a career change to become a crafisher (lobster) in Jackson Bay -
which seems to be the only activity there - now is the time. It looked
like about half of the dozen homes that make up the town are for sale.
